Not letters and numbers. Buttons, zips, laces, and getting your own coat on. The things a teacher notices in the first week.

Parents ask me what their child should know before preschool and they almost always mean letters. Letters are the least of it.
What I noticed, year after year, was smaller and more practical. Who could manage their own coat. Who could work a zip without help. Who could stay with something difficult for four minutes instead of walking away at the first snag.
Those children had an easier September. Not because they were brighter, but because they spent less of the day waiting for an adult to do something for them.
None of it needs a workbook. It needs things with real fastenings on them, and enough repetition that the child stops needing you.
Six that do the job, in the order I would buy them.
A child who can undo their own buckle is not smarter than the others. They have just done it four hundred times.

"I got the Montessori Busy Board for my toddler and it has been amazing. The real buttons, zippers, and buckles keep little hands busy, and I can already see improvements in coordination and focus. It’s fun, well made, and a great way to mix play with learning."

"This 2-sided toy has several activities, a noisemaker, and buttons to slide. The dexterity of some of the activities might be more appropriate for someone 1-2 years old, but there is enough here to keep the visual and tactile interest of younger babies."

None of this is about getting ahead. A child who cannot yet do their own coat is not behind. They have simply not had four hundred goes at it yet.
That is all any of these are for. Enough repetitions, done by the child rather than for them, that the fastening stops being a thing they need an adult for.
Most orders arrive in about a week, so allow that if you want it in use before the first day. There is a 30-day trial if it turns out not to suit.
If I were buying one it would be the Busy Board. Every fastening on it is one they will meet on their own clothes, and it is the only thing here with something left to teach them at five.
