7 Toys That Keep a Toddler Busy at Grandma's House
For the Sundays where nothing is childproofed, there is nothing to play with, and you spend the whole visit two steps behind them.
Fits in a bag · No batteries · Nothing that gets lost in someone else's house
Updated August 2026
We go to my mom's most Sundays. For about a year, I dreaded it.
Her house is lovely and it is not built for a two year old. The good bowls are at toddler height, there is one basket of toys my brother and I used in 1994, and within ten minutes of arriving my son had worked through all of it and moved on to the bookshelf. I would spend the entire visit two steps behind him. I never once finished a coffee while it was hot.
The thing that fixed it was not a bigger toy. It was keeping the right small ones in the bag, permanently, so I never had to remember them.
Four rules for what earns a place in that bag. It has to fit without me carrying a second one. It cannot need batteries, because I am not troubleshooting a toy in my mom's living room. Nothing can detach and vanish under a sofa that is not mine. And it has to hold him long enough that I get an actual conversation with my own mom.
These are the seven that stayed in.
The toys that work at somebody else's house are not the exciting ones. They are the ones that survive being unpacked in a strange room and still give a child something to fail at.
1. Montessori Busy Board

"The Montessori busy board was a huge hit on our 7 hour plane ride to Switzerland!!!! Kept my 9 month old entertained and I know it’s a toy he’ll use in a new ways as he’s older too!"

- Ages
- 6 months to 5 years
- Why It Made the List
- Thirty plus real fastenings sewn into a folding felt board. Buckles, zips, laces, buttons, a clock face, letters and numbers. Nothing lights up and nothing sings, so he is the one doing the work rather than watching a toy perform.
- The Bag Test
- It folds shut like a book and slides flat down the side of a diaper bag. Nothing comes off it, which is the part that matters in a house where losing a piece means never seeing it again.
- Why It Still Works On The Tenth Visit
- Because the buckles take weeks. A toy solved on the first Sunday is finished by the second. This one keeps handing him the next thing he cannot do yet. It also unzips into halves, so when my niece is there they get a page each.
2. 7-in-1 Montessori Cube
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 90 reviews
"Perfect for keeping babies entertained in public."

- 12 months to 3 years
- Why It Made the List
- Seven activities across six sides. When he gives up on one face there are six more within reach, which buys you the stretch between arriving and lunch.
- The Bag Test
- Small enough to sit in a handbag. Nothing detaches, so you are not doing a floor sweep before you leave.
3. Soft Building Blocks
★★★★★ 4.7 out of 5, 85 reviews
"I packed these blocks for a long car ride. The numbers and animals are fun to explore. They work well for simple stacking games. It turned out to be a really useful baby toy."

- Why It Made the List
- Stacking is the first game a toddler can win at, and knocking it down is the second. This is the one that pulls a grandparent onto the floor with them, which is the whole reason you drove over.
- The Bag Test
- Soft, so nothing gets chipped and nobody stands on a corner in bare feet. Bulkier than the rest, so it goes in on the visits where you are staying for lunch.
4. Sensory Fruits and Veggies Sorting Set
★★★★★ 4.7 out of 5, 128 reviews
"Perfect gift for my my granddaughters first birthday. The colors are bright and the size is perfect for toddlers! Kiddos will learn while they play. Good quality toy that will last. Oh, and it’s washable!!"

- Why It Made the List
- A table activity, which is the one thing the others are not. He sorts at the kitchen table while lunch is going on, in the room with everybody else, instead of disappearing down the hall.
- The Bag Test
- Packs into its own bundle. Count them back in before you leave and you are fine.
5. Montessori Geometric Eggs
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 1,148 reviews
"We are very pleased with the geometric eggs - my granddaughter really enjoys opening and closing them, they are a good size for her hands."

- Why It Made the List
- Twist the halves until the shape matches. That is the entire task, and simple is what actually holds a one year old in a room full of adults talking over their head.
- The Bag Test
- Honest warning. These are the one thing on the list that does go missing. Keep them in their tray and do a headcount, or leave them at home for the visits where you are in and out.
6. Montessori Farm Animal Set
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 55 reviews
"Love these - my 2 yo grandaughter finds endless ways to play with them. Great for teaching colors, animals, fine motor skills"

- Why It Made the List
- Twenty pieces turns into a story rather than a puzzle he finishes. At two they get lined up along the coffee table. At four they get names and an argument about who sleeps in the barn.
- The Bag Test
- Twenty small pieces in a house that is not yours is a lot to keep track of. This is the one I leave at my mom's rather than carry back and forth.
7. Rattle Toy Socks
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 36 reviews
"I purchased these for my granddaughter and she loves them! My daughter said that it is the gift that keeps on giving. She is fascinated by the little characters and she found her feet! We are so proud that she can put her foot in her mouth (like the rest of the family). Of all the gifts that we have bestowed on her, this is her favorite!"

- Ages
- 3 to 12 months
- Why It Made the List
- For the stage where you are holding a baby on a sofa and there is nothing to give them. They go on their feet, so there is nothing to drop and nothing to pick up off somebody else's carpet.
- The Bag Test
- They are socks. They live in the bag and you forget they are there until you need them.
One Last Thing
None of this is about the toy being impressive. It is about him being able to get stuck into something without me sitting down beside him, in a room I did not childproof.
Most orders arrive in about a week, so if you have a visit coming up, give yourself that week rather than ordering the night before. There is a 30-day trial if it turns out not to be right.
If I were only putting one thing in the bag it would be the Busy Board. It covers the widest age range here by a distance, nothing falls off it, and it is the only one that works for a baby on a lap and a four year old at the table on the same afternoon.
